Trip Overview

Upper Mustang was closed to outsiders until 1992 and keeps a living Tibetan Buddhist culture. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki through a desert landscape of eroded canyons to Lo Manthang, the medieval walled city of the former kings of Lo, with its 15th-century monasteries.

Itinerary

Morning flight through the Kali Gandaki gorge, then a walk to the gateway village of Kagbeni.
Enter the restricted area and follow the riverbed to Chele.
Cross several passes with views of Nilgiri and Annapurna.
Pass long mani walls and colourful chortens.
Visit the five-storey Charang palace and monastery.
Arrive at the walled capital of the kingdom of Lo.
Visit Jampa and Thubchen monasteries and the royal palace.
Ride or hike to the ancient sky caves of Chhoser.
Several days back down the valley by a different route via Dhakmar.
Morning flight back to Pokhara.
